A property at Lake Balaton is a long-held plan for many foreign buyers: the lake, the climate, easy access and prices that are still attractive by international comparison.
North shore or south shore?
The north shore is defined by vineyards, hills and historic villages: Balatonfüred, Tihany, Badacsony, Keszthely, Balatonalmádi, Révfülöp. Many properties have a lake view; the terrain is often hilly.
The south shore is flatter, with shallow beaches and livelier resorts: Siófok, Zamárdi, Balatonlelle, Balatonboglár, Fonyód. It is popular with families.
Waterfront or hinterland?
Properties on the water or with a lake view are considerably more expensive. Ten to thirty minutes inland typically buys more floor area, a larger plot, more quiet and better value.
